Yo Ho Ho and A Bottle of Light Rum
Rum has been a very popular drink on the face of the earth since its first claim to fame in the 1600’s, when pirates were known for having a great deal of rum on their ships to help cope with the dull nights at sea. However the rum that pirates had, had the reputation for being rather bitter, disgusting and brewed haphazardly for quantity instead of quality. With modern technological advancements in manufacturing, many different companies have begun to offer their clients light rum that is free from all unpleasant tastes and aromas.
Light rum is produced in a fermentation pot; it generally is made with sugar cane which is where it gets its reputation for being so sweet and tangy. This version of rum ferments in the pot for about 24 hours straight until it is processed and put into barrels for a small amount of aging. Due to the process through which light or white rum is made, a much quicker completion time, it does not have all of the distinguished qualities that you may find in a well-aged bottle of dark rum, but it is extremely delicious and it gives you the ability to mix it with a wide variety of different drinks.
Since it is not flavored and spiced as much as brown and dark rum in the creation and aging process, light or white rum is a great base for mixed drinks, and it can easily be used in place of gin in most recipes. It is not, however, quite as versatile as vodka as far as mixed drinks are concerned, but it is far more easy to integrate light rum into your late night cocktails without having to sacrifice on either the taste of the drink or the quality of the alcohol that you are using.
