Banana Liqueur, also known as crème de banana, is generally a sweet flavored liqueur that remains true to the flavor of the fruit it is named for. The flavor of this liqueur makes it a prefect addition to many tropical flavored drinks and a great twist to add to many baking recipes where you need banana flavoring.
A delicious martini recipe to try out on a hot summer day or at your next beach themed party is the Surfer Martini. It has a unique blend of vodka, coconut rum and banana liqueur that will make you happy thinking about the beach even in the middle of the winter.
To create this drink you will combine two ounces of Vodka, one ounce of Coconut Rum, and half an ounce of Banana Liqueur. Shake to mix in a martini shaker filled with ice and then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish the glass with a wedge of pineapple and you are ready to drink and be whisked away to a tropical place.
If you cannot find banana liqueur at your local liquor store then it is easy to make your own homemade banana liqueur in your home. You will need two ripe bananas, two and half teaspoons of vanilla extract, two cups of sugar, and six cups of your favorite unflavored vodka. If you want to give it a different flavor then substitute one cup of unflavored for one cup of flavored, such as mandarin or coconut.
To make the banana liqueur you will need to give it a little time to finish, but the first step is easy. Mash up the bananas well and place them in a gallon sized jar. Pour the vodka into the jar so it covers the bananas. Seal the jar and make sure it is sealed tightly, then place the jar somewhere cool and dry for about a week.
Once the week is up, open the jar and pour the vodka and banana mixture through a strainer to remove the bananas and collect the liquid in a large bowl. Now you will add the sugar and mix it well. Strain the mix again through a cheese cloth to make sure all the sediment is removed. Add the vanilla extract to the final mixture and let it rest for about a day in a clean container. Now you are ready to make your own signature tropical drinks with your home made banana liqueur!
